Pilates

Gentle movement to support strength, flexibility, and wellbeing.

What can Pilates help with?

Pilates is a low-impact form of exercise that focuses on controlled movements to strengthen the body, particularly the core. For people living with cancer, Pilates may help with:

Regaining strength and mobility after treatment, improving posture and flexibility, reducing stress and anxiety, enhancing overall wellbeing and relaxation*

What is Pilates?

Pilates is a series of gentle, controlled exercises that focus on breathing, alignment, and core stability. It helps to improve posture, strength, and balance, which can be particularly beneficial for those recovering from cancer treatments. Movements can be adapted to suit different fitness levels and physical abilities.

What can I expect?

This is a group course.  You’ll be asked to complete a medical questionnaire prior to starting the course. At the start of each session your instructor will ask about any changes and check how you are feeling.

Sessions involve slow, mindful movements, often performed on a mat or using a chair for support. You’ll be guided through exercises that focus on breath control, balance, and gentle strengthening.  Each session builds on the experience of the week before.

How long does it take?

The course lasts for 4 weeks and involves a 1 or 1.5 hour session per week.

I’m concerned about…

Pilates is a low-impact exercise, but if you have any concerns—such as recent surgery or mobility issues—it’s best to check with your instructor and doctor before starting. You’re always encouraged to work at your own pace.

What do we offer?

We offer small group classes, ensuring individual attention and adaptations where needed. Classes are welcoming and relaxed, suitable for all experience levels.

Our instructors

Our Pilates instructors are fully qualified and have completed specialist training in working with people affected by cancer. They are fully insured and volunteer their time to support our charity.  Donations are used to cover essential items such as equipment, venue hire and continuing professional development of our volunteers.

*Please note, this is based on anecdotal feedback, and is not a promise that the therapy will give these benefits every time.
